d'italia and take the overall lead. the two—time tour de france champion has now won stages at all three of cycling's grand tour races. britain's geraint thomas is now his closest rival after yet another dramatic day, as nick parrott reports. yesterday's opening stage produced a surprise result. today, the giro d'italia's reputation as one of the most entertaining road races was enhanced with more highs and lows. at the foot of the final climb. with just six miles to go, pogacar slipped up again because of a puncture. fortunately for him, it was only a brief setback. within minutes, his uae team—mate had guided him back to the main group. the slovenian has been billed as the star of this show and he went on to put on a magnificent performance. with 2.5 miles to go, he took the lead. by the time he reached the summit finish, his rivals were nowhere to be seen. britain's geraint thomas was third across the line to move up to second overall.
